How it all began…

pansOur story began when Peter Riley and his wife Lindsey decided to begin producing natural fudge in the farmhouse kitchen of their 16th century thatched cottage in Mid Devon. They decided that their fudge should contain all natural ingredients whenever possible, and that it should be made only in the traditional way. A large copper cauldron was obtained from an antique shop in Honiton. Their kitchen marble slab was cleaned and sterilised and, using Lindsey’s grandmother’s own recipes, our first batch of vanilla fudge was produced. Cooking by hand in very small batches and using lashings of Devon butter, they found the process, although time-consuming and requiring dedication, was simple, and produced a delicious and unique Devon taste. However, as with many simple foods, making them outstanding requires much honing! Our product testing took several weeks, and our first shop was opened in Torquay in 1987.

The journey to a franchising company…

Since then, Roly’s grew quickly throughout Devon and in a couple of locations outside of the West Country, with many wholesale outlets over the country. In the past five years, Roly’s Fudge has spread across England, with shops as far north as Chester and Lincoln. Until very recently, with the retirement of our beloved franchisees there, Roly’s was in the United States, with shops in Portsmouth and Kennebunkport and fudge being delivered from New York to California. All of our shops are dedicated to producing all natural fudge, with our product always made in full view of the customer. We have also stuck to our roots and continued to make fudge the traditional way, in unique copper pots and on marble slabs.
